I build living systems for people and ideas: a community of more than 1,000 curious people, an independent press, the shape and strategy of organisations finding their next form, and, lately, a hermit crab in a wizard hat.
Underneath all of it is one practice, accompaniment: keeping people company while they unfold themselves, messily and uncertainly, towards aliveness.
The same threshold shows up at every scale: a person between shells, a founder whose venture has outgrown its first form, an organisation trying to grow without losing what made it matter.
Most of what I offer isn’t new knowledge. It’s unforgetting: recovering what was already there, then making it legible: first to yourself, then to the peers you didn’t know you had, then to the world.
For a person, that might become a talk or a book. For an organisation, it’s the architecture: governance, platforms, community, publishing, and revenue that grows out of clarity rather than pressure.
I came to this sideways, through graphic design, social science, public policy and a long stretch running big projects inside universities, so I can hold the poetry and the plumbing at once. I’m Australian, I live in Aotearoa New Zealand, and I founded .

It's amazing to have somebody who is so visionary on my side
What was obvious from the get go with Danu is that he completely gets what I'm trying to achieve. He's been an amazing champion and mentor and friend throughout this process. And I'm going to be carrying on working with Danu because he's just been a completely wonderful guide. We've been looking at creating an ecosystem as he calls it, a place where people can come and find out about my work and belong to a community. I really love that. I love that he understands that I don't want to create a kind of a sales pitch or be trying to get X amounts of sales per month and so on, that really this is about a community building exercise and it was him that really nailed that down for us. He is very astute and he's amazing technically. I like to think that I'm fairly technically savvy but he's absolutely on the ball with everything and he really holds my hand throughout the process and does a lot of the work for me too. So it's just an amazing combo of guide and mentor and helpful technical person who can do a lot of the work for me. Things that I'm not really up for doing I don't really have time to do. He's behind the scenes working away for me and that's been absolutely huge. It's amazing to feel got at last and to have somebody who is so visionary on my side. It's just enormous. I am going to continue working with Danu — why would I ever stop? He is amazing and I highly, highly recommend him.

Danu has achieved more in a few months than I could in a few years
I am the founder of the Center for Non-Religious Spirituality. Our growing pains have been compounded by inadequate organizational infrastructure and the need for strategic priorities and next steps. Danu has been instrumental in addressing these needs and challenges in several areas including: business visioning, strategic, planning, infrastructure-building, and technology consulting. Danu has achieved more in a few months than I could in a few years, which is why I plan on working with him long-term.

There's no one else like him
Danu has mastery where most people have blind spots.
I've worked with Danu both as a colleague at a tech company and afterward on a personal level, so I have firsthand experience of how skillfully he navigates complex organizational dynamics and how he approaches one-on-one coaching.
At the organizational level, three qualities set him apart. First, he builds trust even with the most resistant stakeholders. Second, he identifies core issues fast. Third, he has an intuitive sense for how much change an organization can absorb each week, strategically laying groundwork for bigger goals through smaller wins that bring people along. I've watched him deliver uncomfortable truths to leadership in ways that left them nodding in agreement rather than getting defensive. It's impressive.
We all know interpersonal dynamics make or break organizational success (“culture eats strategy for breakfast”). Yet most organizations don't seriously try to solve this. The reality is, it's nearly impossible for leaders to address these issues from the inside: outside help is often needed. This is precisely Danu's strength: doing the difficult work others can’t. He has a rare understanding of both people and strategy, allowing him to gently guide teams toward alignment. He excels particularly with transitions: new systems, processes, or projects.
On a personal level, Danu simply gets people. He asks questions that create genuine "aha" moments, where suddenly everything clicks into place. I've rarely felt so seen or supported, even when he's gently challenging my assumptions. I've worked with other coaches who helped with the current circumstances, but Danu's gift lies in unlocking potential you didn't know you had. If you want to level up, change careers, or launch your own business, he's the ideal partner.
Danu is wickedly smart, deeply insightful, and wonderfully kind. He doesn’t accept surface explanations, but digs deeper to identify what’s actually important, and what genuinely creates value. There's no one else like him. So if you’re ready to explore meaningful change, not just surface fixes, don't hesitate to reach out to him.
Danu Poyner changed my life -- there is no one who has ever made me feel more heard, understood and cared for, as a professional creative, and as a whole person. He has a way of seeing into the deep structure's of one's motivations and vocational aims, and fostering a holism between one's aspirations and one's values. That's a fancy way of saying this: he has helped me to make sense of my self.
Over the course of years working together, I have gone from a haphazard creative and professional life, to having a clear self-concept as a leader, artist and educator. Not only does he have the skill and intellectual depth to do the kind of work he does, he also operates from a place of sincere care -- for all his brilliance, this depth of pastoral kindness is the most special thing about him. He's a uniquely suited guide for those of us who don't know where we fit in, in this cookie cutter world.

A 21st-century Renaissance Man
Working with Danu these last few years has given new meaning to both collaboration and mentoring, depending on the project. Having a truly wonderful mind, Danu’s breadth of experience makes him a 21st-century Renaissance Man.
Despite his Great Big Brain, Danu can break down complex material into bite-size bits (albeit a lot of them) rendering material accessible to neophytes yet nuanced for the more sophisticated. His wry wit and seemingly infinite patience make him an entertaining teacher and effective manager of a wildly diverse international community.
Articles crafted by Danu are captivating and concise, even his long form pieces leave me stunned with admiration, truly a master word smith. I’m sure he has limits and there are things he can’t do with artistry & elegance, I’ve just not encountered them yet.

Both visionary and deeply caring
I’ve been involved with Grokkist since its inception and have watched Danu shape it with heart and brilliance. He’s the rare founder who is both visionary and deeply caring—always generous with his time, quick to understand the real problem, and practical in how he solves it. Every interaction has left me feeling supported and inspired. I couldn’t recommend Danu and Grokkist more highly.

Danu succeeded where others had failed
Danu succeeded where four others had failed. On my fifth attempt at creating a website for my coaching practice, I was weighed down with doubt and misgivings. Yet Danu steered us past every underwater rock. He listened deeply—even when I wasn’t sure of my own words—and brought clarity and shape to what I wanted to express.
The result was so good that I immediately re-commissioned him to help me build more of the foundations of my business. And along the way, he helped me discover something I never expected: my inner writer, a voice I now treasure.

Life-changing professional support, personal development, and commercial outcome
I had worked professionally with Danu before, but this year was the first time I had the opportunity to work with him within his grokking framework. My project was to deliver a book for publishing on a short deadline, and the results were amazing; both in terms of the professional support (writing methodology), my personal development within difficult psychological areas, and also the commercial outcome. It has been and will continue to be a life changing experience in all three aspects.
I just can't recommend Danu and his work with the Grokkist community enough. Write him and ask how he can support your project; individually like in my case or via his cost-effective 'off-the-shelf' projects. No seriously; just write him ✍️😊

I treasure our collaboration
When Danu invited me to be a guest on the Still Curious podcast, I was left speechless by the list of possible questions he sent me. The thoroughness, thoughtfulness, presence, and intention that he evidently channeled into crafting the questions and preparing for our conversation broke open my heart. Although our conversation had yet to begin, I already felt seen, heard, and valued by Danu.
Yes, Danu is dependable, steady, and efficient, but he is also incredibly kind, generous, curious, and attentive. Love for his fellow humans and their unique, individual expression infuses everything he does. His open heart makes all the difference.
I treasure our collaboration and feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to know and work with Danu in this lifetime. Not only is Danu still curious, he is still kind.

I am constantly in awe of Danu's ability to inspire people
I worked with Danu at a university. He was brought in to fix a very broken research reporting system. It was a joy to work with him. He brought boundless optimism and positivity, along with a very realistic assessment of what could be achieved. The key to his success was understanding the people he was working with, great communication and being able to plan strategically. In the end the University had its best ever result - a direct result of Danu's input. I have since followed Danu's career and am constantly in awe of his ability to inspire people, and to bring about improvement without judgement and in a caring and supportive way. I was part of his trial Red Thread cohort, and the experience has hugely helped my understanding of my own process and the way the disparate parts of my life hang together. I cannot recommend him to others highly enough.

Working with Danu has given me the strength to take on new adventures
Danu was the first person to ask me to be interviewed for a podcast, which catalyzed the shaping of "Future Grace."
Before Danu asked me, I was already trying to find my voice in this world without knowing exactly how to amplify it. Having the Still Curious podcast experience showed me that at least one person in the world was interested in hearing my voice. That's powerful.
Working with Danu has given me the strength to take on new adventures I might have otherwise hesitated to act on.

So much presence
I wanted to ask Claude to write a testimonial by entering the following information: “I absolutely love working with Danu. He is incredibly kind. I feel like he really listens and I feel very seen, understood and held in a way that is very unusual. So much presence. He is also super smart and I love the deep, conceptual conversations with him. I got lucky to meet him in person recently and felt really sad that he ever had to leave again. He is the kind of person you want around. Always. Well, most of the time. I love where his heart is at, what he makes happen and how and where he takes his ideas, like Grokkist. Everything we have planned and done together thus far has been fun and felt effortless. To the contrary, it felt more like a treat, in part, because he was able to bring parts of me out that I wouldn't have seen in myself.” I decided this is exactly what I want to say, so I kept Claude quiet.

Danu gently shepherds you into presence and into your own truth
Through Danu Poyner’s guidance, I discovered the red thread weaving through my life and work, my most authentic connecting story. His Find Your Red Thread course offered more than insight; it was an invitation to reclaim and speak from the part of me that has always cared and called me forward. And through Grokkist Press, Danu gave my book Salt & Seeds a home. The experience of being published has not been arm's length like other publishers, but educational and participatory. Danu doesn’t just teach, he gently shepherds you into presence and into your own truth. I felt empowered by his facilitation, more grounded, clearer, and more myself, thanks to his quiet, steady brilliance. I highly recommend everything he is delivering.

This whole wonderful experiment of the Grokkist community has helped me grow and develop as a human being.
Danu has been a powerful influence over my life. This whole wonderful experiment of the Grokkist community has helped me grow and develop as a human being. I appreciate Danu's gentle guidance and questions in the various activities we have been involved with together. He has a knack for asking probing questions and allowing us to explore a topic together. Unlike so many people who have learned to take a "coaching stance", I never feel like Danu already knows the answer to a question and is simply "waiting for me to come to the right answer on my own." Instead he gently probes and questions, willing to be surprised by what we come up with together.
I truly value his friendship and stewardship of the Grokkist community. He is helping me discover ways of approaching my own work and role in the world.

A weekly letter on Substack, where philosophy meets the work of building. In Danu’s own voice.

For the stretch between shells: when the old one has had its time and the next hasn’t fitted yet. Becoming legible to the peers you didn’t know you had.
Every crossing has its own weather. The exposure of having nothing on your back. The disorientation of not knowing, for a while, what you are. A tiredness that sleeping doesn’t fix. And underneath it, the sideways becoming that happens while you try things on. It goes better in company, among people who can see what you’re turning into before you can.

Unforgetting
Nine short pieces for the dread of “so, what do you do?”, and the secret joy of being too many things to answer it in a sentence. Becoming legible to yourself.
Each piece holds one idea and one thing to try: the ugly question, the shrink-wrapped octopus, the rooms of your inner home, thresholds and their guardians, and on to coddiwomple. The name comes from aletheia, the Greek word for truth, which means something like coming back up out of Lethe, the river of forgetting. Free, and nothing you write leaves your browser.
